The impact of active breaks in the workplace on the perception of stress, pain and sleep quality in administrative workers

Abstract

Introduction: Behavioral sedentary lifestyle is considered a serious public health problem worldwide. Stress, low back pain and poor sleep quality are among the biggest causes of presenteeism and absenteeism in the workplace and better management of a sedentary lifestyle during the workday can be a promoter of workers' health and productivity. Objective: To investigate the impact of introducing a routine of active breaks in daily physical activity, on self-perception of stress, low back pain and sleep quality in administrative workers. Method: Descriptive-exploratory study carried out with 114 administrative professionals of both sexes (76% women). Participants were instructed to follow an active break routine for 12 weeks with the support of an application (APP) and a pre- and post-intervention questionnaire was used. Results/Discussion: Before the intervention, 75.4% of workers did not take active breaks. After intervention, 39.5% of workers began to take at least 1 active break daily and 44% began to take 2 or more active breaks per day (p=0.01). A significant reduction in the perception of stress (p=0.004) and low back pain during the journey (p<0.001) was observed, with 32% of participants claiming to no longer feel pain after the intervention. Furthermore, we observed an improvement in sleep quality (p=0.001) and a significant increase in the frequency of weekly exercise in the group (p<0.0001). The results indicate a positive association between the management of sedentary behavior in the workplace and perception of signs related to physical and mental stress. Conclusion: The routine of active breaks in the workplace appears to have a positive impact on sedentary lifestyle, reducing the perception of pain, stress and quality of sleep in administrative workers, and can be part of ergonomic guidelines for employers and regulatory bodies. Incorporating this routine can result in employees being more active and less reactive to work-related physical and psychophysiological stress, thus promoting a healthier and more productive work environment, in addition to impacting sleep quality and enhancing increased physical activity in the workplace. leisure period.
