Abstract

Introduction: The increasing prevalence of neuropsychiatric disorders and the impairment of mental health represent one of the greatest challenges in contemporary healthcare. However, the majority of the population is unaware of the impact of diet on mental health. Objective: To determine the harmful impact of certain foods on the development of neuropsychiatric disorders, with the aim of changing dietary patterns to promote mental health. Methodology: Literature review using major electronic databases, using the keywords "diet" and "mental health." Results: Studies show that trans fats are associated with a higher risk of developing depression1. Diets high in fructose can lead to increased anxious and depressive behaviors and alter cortisol levels2. The consumption of sugary beverages can increase the prevalence of mental disorders3, as well as some emulsifiers like carboxymethylcellulose and polysorbate-80, which alter gut microbiota and its functions4. Ultra-processed products increase the risk of developing non-communicable chronic diseases and symptoms of depression and anxiety5 due to their influence on the inflammatory system, oxidative stress, and gut microbiome6. Conclusion: Knowledge of the harmful effects of certain foods and the implementation of a healthy diet directly impact mental health.
