Effects of physical activity on the promotion of mental health

Introduction: The deterioration of mental health is related to an unhealthy lifestyle. Regular physical activity is a protective factor against chronic diseases and cognitive problems. Objective: To review the level of scientific evidence regarding the practice of physical activity in promoting mental health. Methodology: Literature review, including articles published in the last ten years, available in full, in English and Portuguese languages. The descriptors used were: "physical activity," "quality of life," and "mental health." Results: Physical exercise can be an effective treatment for various mental disorders, including anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, among others. There are also benefits of physical activity in children and adolescents, such as reducing depression and anxiety, improving self-esteem, and academic performance. Exercise has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects on the central nervous system, promotes neural growth factors, stimulates the formation of new nerve cells, improves neuronal metabolism, modulates neurotransmitters, and regulates cortisol. Conclusion: to incorporating physical activity into daily life, the investment is not only in physical health but also in mental health.
