positive psychiatryAbstract
Positive Psychiatry became a field of knowledge within Psychiatry in 2015, as proposed by Dilip Jeste, then President of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and is defined as the science and practice of psychiatry that focuses on promoting well-being and health , through interventions that seek to improve positive psychosocial factors such as resilience, optimism, wisdom and social engagement, in people with or without mental and physical illnesses.
It approaches Positive Psychology, organized by Martin Seligman in 1998, but emphasizes biological aspects and practical applications within the psychiatric clinic and is not opposed to psychiatry with a focus on diagnoses and treatments of mental disorders, but adds a focus on protective factors and in the mobilization of existing internal forces, which makes the change in behavior more effective as it enhances intrinsic motivation.
